Nelson Leafs comeback to double up Nitehawks

The Nelson Leafs exploded for five third-period goals in a 6-3 victory over the Beaver Valley Nitehawks on Tuesday in Nelson.

The Nitehawks took a 2-1 lead heading into the final frame on goals from Gavin Damstrom and Simon Nemethy as B.V. outshot the host Leafs 23-12 through two periods.

But cue the comeback.

Nelson forward Joe Davidson scored a power-play goal before the midway point of the third to tie the game at two. Just over two minutes later Cole Wyatt converted a dish from Kaleb Comishin to give Nelson a 3-2 lead at 8:39.

Suddenly, the Leafs dominated and Reid Wilson and Tyler Badger each scored at even strength to make it 5-2 with 4:03 to play.

Nelson native Kaleb Percival scored a too-little too-late goal for Beaver Valley with 58 seconds to play, and Davidson notched his second of the night and 13th of the campaign into an empty net for the 6-3 final.

The Leafs outshot B.V. 16-8 in the period, although the Nitehawks held a 31-26 edge in regulation. The win for the Leafs move them to within three points of first place and a diluted Nitehawks team. Beaver Valley has been hit hard by the injury bug and are without top defenceman Brock Wallace, Luke Woodrow, Jesse Ihas and Quaid Anderson, as well as forward Marcus McKeachern.

The Hawks host the Leafs Friday night at the Beaver Valley Arena at 7 p.m. then travel to Spokane on Saturday for a match against the Braves.
